A dermatome refers to the area of skin that is supplied by a specific spinal nerve root from the spinal cord.  Pinprick testing or light touch testing is completed on the area of skin that is innervated by a specific spinal nerve root. 

Testing for dermatomes in the upper extremities is as follows:

C4-Shoulder acromioclavicular joint
C5-Lateral elbow
C6-Thumb
C7-Middle finger
C8-Small finger
T1-Medial elbow
